What you can do with google-sheets-values-core-openapi via MCP

Every endpoint below becomes a governed tool your AI agent (Claude, ChatGPT, or a customer-facing VX agent) can call — with scoped permissions, sandbox testing, and audit logs.

MethodPathOperationDescription
GET /spreadsheets/{spreadsheetId}/values/{range} getSheetValues Read a cell range
PUT /spreadsheets/{spreadsheetId}/values/{range} updateSheetValues Update a cell range
GET /spreadsheets/{spreadsheetId}/values:batchGet batchGetSheetValues Read multiple cell ranges
POST /spreadsheets/{spreadsheetId}/values/{range}:append appendSheetValues Append rows after a table
POST /spreadsheets/{spreadsheetId}/values:batchUpdate batchUpdateSheetValues Update multiple cell ranges

Authentication

bearerAuth

Bearer token — sent as Authorization: Bearer <token>

Google OAuth access token with a Sheets scope such as spreadsheets or drive.file.

Usage guide

Getting credentials

  1. Sign in to a Google account and open the Google Cloud Console.
  2. Create or select a Google Cloud project and enable the Google Sheets API.
  3. Configure the OAuth consent screen and create OAuth credentials for the integration.
  4. Authorize access to the spreadsheets that VX Agent is allowed to use.
  5. When VX Agent asks for authentication, provide the Google OAuth access token through the secure connection configuration.

Never paste an OAuth token, client secret, or refresh token into the Swagger file, marketplace description, prompts, or chat messages.

How to use this API

Use the Google Sheets Values API to read, append, update, and batch-update cell values in authorized spreadsheets. It is useful for reports, lightweight CRM tables, inventory tracking, lead lists, content calendars, and internal workflow data.

A typical workflow is:

  1. Identify the correct spreadsheetId from the Google Sheets URL.
  2. Identify the exact sheet name and A1 range, such as Sheet1!A1:C20.
  3. Use GET /spreadsheets/{spreadsheetId}/values/{range} to read existing values before writing.
  4. Use GET /spreadsheets/{spreadsheetId}/values:batchGet to read multiple ranges.
  5. Use POST /spreadsheets/{spreadsheetId}/values/{range}:append to add rows after an existing table.
  6. Use PUT /spreadsheets/{spreadsheetId}/values/{range} to update a specific range.
  7. Use POST /spreadsheets/{spreadsheetId}/values:batchUpdate for coordinated updates to multiple ranges.

Use RAW when values must remain literal. Use USER_ENTERED when Google Sheets should interpret formulas, dates, and formatting as if the values were typed in the Sheets interface. Always read the target range first and verify the update response after writing.

Safety and usage notes

Appending, overwriting, or batch-updating values changes external spreadsheet data and may trigger formulas, automations, notifications, or reports. Ask for confirmation before every consequential write. Confirm the spreadsheet, sheet name, range, column order, values, and overwrite behavior.

Do not clear or overwrite an entire sheet unless the user explicitly confirms the exact scope. Use narrow ranges and small batches. Do not expose private customer, employee, financial, or operational data. Do not expose OAuth credentials.

A 403 response usually means that the connected account cannot access the spreadsheet or that the OAuth scope is insufficient. A 400 response may indicate invalid A1 notation, a missing valueInputOption, or a malformed values array.

Official documentation: Read and write cell values and Append values.
