Authentication

bearerAuth

Bearer token — sent as Authorization: Bearer <token>

How to get a credential

  1. Sign in to Intercom as a workspace admin and open Settings → Integrations → Developer Hub.
  2. Click New app, name it (for example "VX Agents Help Center") and pick your workspace.
  3. Open the app's Configure → Authentication page and copy the Access token.
  4. For an app other workspaces install, use OAuth instead and request the permissions below.

Permissions used

Permission Operations
Read and list articles listArticles, searchArticles, getArticle, listArticleVersions
Write articles createArticle, updateArticle, stageArticleDraft, publishArticleDraft
Read and list help centers / collections listHelpCenters, listCollections, getCollection
Write collections createCollection

Common errors

  • 401 Unauthorized: the token is wrong or was revoked. Copy it again from the Developer Hub.
  • 403 Forbidden: the app lacks the permission above; enable it and reinstall the app.
  • 400 / 422: a required field is missing (title and author_id when creating an article) or an id has the wrong type.
  • 429 Too Many Requests: Intercom rate limits per app and workspace; wait for X-RateLimit-Reset and retry.

Store the token as a VX Agents credential (Bearer token); it is sent as Authorization: Bearer <token>.

Usage guide

Setup

  • Credential: an Intercom access token from Developer Hub → your app → Authentication, stored as a Bearer credential.
  • Every call sends Intercom-Version: 2.17; leave it at that value.
  • Worth pinning: the help_center_id you publish to (from listHelpCenters) and the admin author_id new articles are written under.

Update or write a help article

  1. listHelpCenters to get the help center id, then listCollections to see where articles live.
  2. searchArticles with phrase (and help_center_id, state=published) to find existing articles before writing a new one; avoid duplicates.
  3. getArticle to read the current title and body; listArticleVersions shows who changed it and when.
  4. For an existing article, stageArticleDraft with the new title / body (HTML) so the live article stays unchanged, show the user the draft, then publishArticleDraft after they approve.
  5. For a new article, createArticle with title, author_id, body, parent_id (collection id), parent_type=collection and state=draft. Switch to state=published with updateArticle only after the user confirms.
  6. createCollection only when no collection fits.

Confirm with the user before any write that publishes content customers will see (publishArticleDraft, createArticle or updateArticle with state=published).

Good to know

  • Ids are integers passed as path parameters (article_id, id, collection_id).
  • body is HTML; description is the short summary shown under the title.
  • List responses include a pages object; when pages.next is set there are more results than returned, so narrow with searchArticles instead.
  • searchArticles with highlight=true returns matched snippets, useful for answering a customer question with a link.
  • Timestamps (created_at, updated_at) are Unix seconds.
  • Rate limits are per app and workspace; on 429 wait until X-RateLimit-Reset.
